The space rock, known as 2016 HO3, is a rare quasi-satellite — a type of near-Earth asteroid that orbits the sun but sticks close to our planet. Astronomers first discovered it in 2016 using the Pan-STARRS telescope, or Panoramic Survey Telescope and Rapid Response System, in Hawaii. Scientists call the asteroid Kamo’oalewa, a name derived from a Hawaiian creation chant that alludes to an offspring traveling on its own. Kamo’oalewa specimen: A connecting puzzle pieceStudying crater impacts on the moon can also help scientists better understand the consequences of asteroid impacts should a space rock pose a threat to Earth in the future. There’s no other place, no other planet in our solar system with a moon like our moon.

JPMorgan thinks Assaí Atacadista, one of the largest retailers in Brazil, is a strong investment play as the company begins to reflect better operating trends. Analyst Joseph Giordano upgraded Assaí, a Brazilian self-service wholesale company with almost 300 stores that trades on the New York Stock Exchange, to overweight from neutral. JPMorgan also raised its price target by $2.50 to $17.50, implying upside of almost 30% over the next year. "We revisit our views on the Brazilian cash & carry space ahead of 1Q24 results," Giordano wrote in a note Tuesday. A more flexible balance sheet would enable Assaí to take advantage of the fact that major competitors are not opening new stores, he said.

Tiendas BBB (3B), Mexico's largest discount food chain, has strong growth potential, according to JPMorgan. 3B — short for "bueno, bonito y barato," or "good, nice and cheap" — is "good, nice and high growth with solid returns," according to analyst Joseph Giordano. Compared to other markets such as Colombia, Turkey and Germany in which hard discount stores have a penetration rate of 20% or higher, the rate stands at only 2% in Mexico, said Giordano. That means 3B — which is already among the largest discount food retailers in Mexico — has room to expand boost store productivity. Giordano forecasts 3B reaching a 5-year compound annual growth rate of 15%, setting it apart from its local competition.

BUENOS AIRES (Reuters) - Argentine President Javier Milei on Friday called for two government officials to resign, saying he needed greater commitment to his agenda after congress rejected his reform package earlier in the week. Milei, a self-defined anarcho-capitalist who took office in December, called for Mining Secretary Flavia Royon and Osvaldo Giordano, head of the country's ANSES social insurance agency, to step down. Congress' rejection of the omnibus bill on Tuesday marked a major setback for Milei, who has accused opposition lawmakers of "betrayal". "I wish the president a great administration and wherever I go I will continue to work for the good of Argentina," he said. On Friday he was in Rome, where he is scheduled to meet with his countryman Pope Francis.

Argentina's Milei Says Shutting Central Bank 'Non-Negotiable'

BUENOS AIRES (Reuters) - Argentina's President-elect Javier Milei said on Friday that the closure of the country's central bank, a signature campaign pledge, was a "non-negotiable matter", according to a statement from his office posted on social media platform X. Argentina's social security administration ANSES, a key institution given Milei's pledge to slash state spending and subsidies, will be lead by economist Osvaldo Giordano from the key central Cordoba region, the statement added. That marks a shift from a previous plan that Milei would appoint a close ally to lead the administration. Milei faces major hurdles to implement his more radical reform plans, which include dollarizing the economy, shutting the central bank and privatizing state companies like YPF, which will take time if they can be done at all. Milei also has to juggle demands from the more mainstream conservative bloc, whose public backing was key to him winning the run-off election last week.

The practice of citizen-originated ballot measures began 125 years ago when South Dakota became the first in the nation to enact a statewide initiative and referendum process. But some still invoke his name in their fight to preserve voters’ ballot measure rights. “It represents for me the fundamental idea of the equal dignity of every human being,” said Heidelberger, who blogs about South Dakota politics. The political conditions were brief but just right in 1897 for lawmakers to approve it; voters passed it the following year. CNN —Google was hit with a wide-ranging lawsuit on Tuesday alleging the tech giant scraped data from millions of users without their consent and violated copyright laws in order to train and develop its artificial intelligence products. The complaint also claims Google has taken “virtually the entirety of our digital footprint,” including “creative and copywritten works” to build its AI products. The complaint points to a recent update to Google’s privacy policy that explicitly states the company may use publicly accessible information to train its AI models and tools such as Bard. It is also seeking unspecified damages and payments as financial compensation to people whose data was allegedly misappropriated by Google. Giordano contrasted the benefits and alleged harms of how Google typically indexes online data to support its core search engine with the new allegations of it scraping data to train AI tools.

The rise in the use of Ozempic for reasons beyond treating diabetes has led to a national shortage. Now, attention has shifted to a dietary supplement called berberine, which is being touted on social media as "nature's Ozempic." Similar to Ozempic, berberine decreases blood sugar and can lead to weight reduction, says Giordano who is also co-founder of Rebesana, a company that researches healthspan and lifespan. "It doesn't slow down how the stomach empties, which is one of the main ways that Ozempic and Mounjaro work." But Giordano says berberine appears to have great health benefits that far exceed weight loss: "I don't know why doctors don't recommend this regularly."

CNN —OpenAI, the company behind the viral ChatGPT tool, has been hit with a lawsuit alleging the company stole and misappropriated vast swaths of peoples’ data from the internet to train its AI tools. The proposed class action lawsuit, filed Wednesday in a California federal court, claims that OpenAI secretly scraped “massive amounts of personal data from the internet,” according to the complaint. Microsoft, a major investor into OpenAI, was also named as a defendant in the suit and did not immediately respond to a request for comment. It also seeks payments of “data dividends” as financial compensation to people whose information was used to develop and train OpenAI’s tools. OpenAI publicly launched ChatGPT late last year, and the tool immediately went viral for its ability to generate compelling, human-sounding responses to user prompts.

The fund, focused on projects in Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development countries, could invest across wind and solar as well as other clean technologies such as batteries and grid infrastructure. "You have folks now that are really trying to focus their portfolio construction around the different sub-sectors in infrastructure," Giordano said, citing increasing demand from pension schemes attracted to assets that match long-term liabilities. As a result, the company said it is targeting between $5 billion and $7 billion for its fourth fund, after $4.8 billion was raised for its predecessor, which closed in April 2021. Among the investments made by the third fund was one in high-power charging network IONITY, which raised 700 million euros in November. Depending on the amount raised, the fund could make around 18-22 investments across a mixture of early stage and developed projects, Giordano said, and could also consider co-investments.

TORONTO, April 20 (Reuters) - Captain John Tavares scored his first postseason hat-trick as the Toronto Maples Leafs avenged a Game One rout with a 7-2 thrashing of the Tampa Bay Lightning on Thursday, leveling the opening round Stanley Cup playoff best-of-seven series at 1-1. Leafs fans had their fingers on the panic button after a 7-3 loss to the Lightning on Tuesday, booing the team off the ice. "We needed a response tonight in a big way," said Leafs coach Sheldon Keefe. The oddsmakers are backing Toronto to win the best-of-seven series but history favors the Lightning, who have won seven consecutive playoff series after taking the first game. Thursday's contest turned nasty right from the start with the Leafs' Mark Giordano and Tampa Bay tough guy Zach Bogosian dropping the gloves to fight early in the opening period.

Leaders of the America250 Foundation and other officials gathered at the Library of Congress for a ceremony to sign a memorandum of understanding in 2021. WASHINGTON—The ousted chairman of a commission planning activities around the nation’s 250th anniversary filed a lawsuit against three fellow commissioners he claims conspired to get him and his executive director replaced by publicly criticizing their management. It “clearly was a cabal to have them removed from their leadership positions,” said George Bochetto, an attorney representing Daniel DiLella, the former U.S. Semiquincentennial Commission chairman, and Frank Giordano, the executive director who is also a plaintiff. The Philadelphia state court lawsuit seeks at least $50,000 in damages for what Mr. Bochetto calls a conspiracy based on “half-truths, mistruths, contortions of circumstances and rank jealousy.”
